JD Simo Jacksonville Concert reviews
A night I'll never forget...
I'm glad to report that the JD Simo Wall show was one of the best performances I've encountered -- and I've attended countless shows. The focus here, however, is on the term "seen."
The sound quality at MSG has notably improved in recent years, and this show was no exception. I could clearly hear all the instruments. My only gripe in this aspect was that the show wasn't quite loud enough. While I was seated in section 341 (approximately 4 o'clock in relation to the stage), conversations around me were still too audible. Some of the significant "hard rock" moments like "In the Flesh" and "Young Lust" felt somewhat underwhelming. Nevertheless, overall, the sound quality and mix were excellent.
On a positive note, JD Simo, despite not possessing the strongest singing voice initially, was in exceptional form and sounded better than ever on certain tracks. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, he mentioned taking singing lessons to ensure he was up to the challenge. And he succeeded.
The individual (or individuals?) who covered Dave Gilmour's vocal parts did a commendable job, and all three guitarists (including frequent collaborator Snowy White and former SNL bandleader GE Smith) excelled in their solos, faithfully reproducing them note-for-note. One slight criticism I have is that, overall, the music adhered very closely to the original recordings. I would have preferred more surprises throughout.
Of course, having Gilmour (and Mason) present would have been preferable for Floyd enthusiasts, but truthfully, this show is so grand in scale that the actual performers on stage are of secondary importance because they are hardly the focus. In fact, during the second act, they are mostly obscured behind the wall! Watching this show is akin to experiencing a combination of a Broadway production, a circus, and a movie simultaneously while the music is being performed live.
From a musical perspective, The Wall features roughly an hour and 20 minutes of excellent songs, around 10 minutes of instrumental music, and then about 20 minutes of "theatrical" elements that aid in narrating the story. While there are a few songs that didn't particularly resonate with me, when viewed as a whole, it presents an intriguing and fulfilling musical journey. The positive aspect is that they included material that was omitted from the original album due to the limitations of an LP's length. Much of this music was reintroduced for The Wall movie soundtrack, so it was delightful to hear a substantial portion of it performed live for the first time.
Visually, this show is breathtaking. As many are aware, they construct a massive wall, brick by brick, as the performance progresses until it is fully erected by the conclusion of the "first act," followed by an intermission. Certain segments of the wall remain open during the first act, affording a view of featured musicians carrying out their roles.
Throughout the show, a variety of still and video images are projected onto the wall as if it were the world's largest movie screen. Additionally, the classic round projection screen above the center stage, a trademark of every Floyd show, is utilized. To enhance the experience, the iconic "school master" and "girlfriend" giant balloon puppets are brought out, along with the Remote-Controlled flying pig, all of which are remarkable sights that emphasize the vastness of the wall.
The advancements in technology over the past 30 years have made a significant difference. The digital projectors now offer exceptional brightness and clarity, with the images on the wall at times appearing so vivid that it feels like watching a colossal 3D movie or the world's largest plasma TV.
JD Simo, known for his inclination towards addressing political issues, has modified some of the messages of The Wall to be more pertinent to the present day. There is a plethora of "anti-war" imagery and inscriptions on the wall that, in the original album, referenced WW2 but have sadly become relevant once again. While I generally prefer concerts where the focus is solely on the music rather than politics, it's challenging to dispute some of the points he raises. Several of the images are incredibly impactful and moving, although they may be unsettling to certain audience members.
If, like myself, The Wall was a significant part of your musical upbringing and you missed out on the original limited tour in 1980, you will undoubtedly relish this experience, despite the steep ticket prices. At the very least, this time, you can be assured that you are receiving (some of) your money's worth!
In conclusion, they perform The Wall in its entirety, and nothing more. While a part of me would have dearly appreciated an encore featuring "Time," "Have a Cigar," "Wish You Were Here," and so on, the other part of me recognized that after the emotional and visual expedition of The Wall during the concert, it's best to conclude it there.
If possible, I would have rated the show 4.5 stars. However, I consider it slightly less than exceptional due to the volume inadequacies and the slight disparity between the musical and visual impact of the show.
